Beijing to Chengde 5-Day Great Wall Bike Tour

Dates:

Route Map

This five-day bicycle tour begins and ends in Beijing, China's capital. This tour is designed as a moderately challenging ride. Average daily cycling mileage will be about 32 miles (53 km). On some days we may use vehicle transport to supplement the cycling to get us to the next destination. There will be a support vehicle to carry luggage (and cyclists when needed), so riders need only carry their day-use gear. This tour will visit both well-known and little-known sights and will appeal to those who have cultural, social and geographical interests.

On the day before the first day, the guide will meet the participants at the Beijing airport, then transfer to the hotel. On day one we will meet and go for an easy ride around Tian'anmen, around Zhongnanhai (residence of current leaders), market areas, and "hutongs" (the soon-to-be-extinct small alleyways of old Beijing). There are options to visit the Forbidden City (about 2 hours), and Tiantan (Temple of Heaven) Park. At night view the Beijing Opera. The idea is to get a feeling for Beijing from the seat of the bike.

On day second day, the group will be picked up relatively early (7:30 AM is best) from your hotel by your guide and the driver in a van with the bikes. You can leave any excess luggage at your hotel in Beijing. We will drive to the start point about two hours north of Beijing to a town called Liulimiao. From there we will cycle to and along the Miyun Reservoir on a very scenic route and spend the night in a small resort inn.

The third day we will cycle to Simatai in the morning and then go for a hike on the Great Wall (up to four hours if we hike to the Jinshanling) where we will be picked up by the driver and returned to your hotel at the entrance to Simatai.

On the fourth day, we will cycle to Chengde on the back roads and spend the night in Chengde.

On the last day, there will be a tour of a few Chengde's sights including the Summer Palace Resort and the Tibetan Monastery, a small replica of the Potala Palace in Lhasa. We will return to Beijing in the evening concluding the bike tour.
