This easy-to-moderate 17-day bike tour begins in Beijing, the capital of China. After arriving in Beijing and getting settled at the hotel, the group will cycle through Beijing’s old neighborhoods and along the narrow alleys called hutongs. The following day the group will tour by bike to visit Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. On the third day, the group will take a motor vehicle excursion to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs then fly to Xi'an in the evening.

On the fourth day in Xi’an, the group will visit the Terracotta Warriors by motor vehicle and then explore the city wall by bike in the afternoon followed by a Tang Dynasty cultural show in the evening. The next day there will be a bike tour to Wild Goose Pagoda and a visit to the Shaanxi Provincial Museum followed by an evening flight to Chengdu.

On the sixth day in Chengdu, the group will cycle to visit the Panda Research Base and a visit to Wenshu Monastery. The following day the group will cycle first to Huanglongxi, a historic village on the Fu River for lunch then head to Meishan where the group will meet a vehicle for transport to Leshan. The following day, the group will visit the Giant Sitting Buddha (232 ft, 71 m). Afterwards we head east to Rongxian for another to visit China's second largest Buddha (193 ft, 58.7 m) and then take motor transport to Zigong, the location of dinosaur and salt museums.

On the ninth day, we will then visit Dazu. Here we will spend two nights to give us time to cycle to a number of Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist sculptures dating from the 9th to 13th centuries.

On the tenth day, the group will travel to Chongqing by bus and board the luxury Yangtze River Cruise boat in the evening. This is a three-day cruise through the dramatic Three Gorges and past the construction site of the world’s largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam. When arriving in Wuhan on the fourteenth day, the group will transfer to airport for the flight to Shanghai.

Shanghai is China’s most modern city and home to 13 million people. There will be biking in Shanghai and dinning on the TV tower to get a bird’s eye view on old and new Shanghai. A city tour by bike in the old town, the Bund, Yu Garden and the Shanghai Museum. Evening cruise on Huangpu River.

The tour will end on the 17th day and include transport to the Shanghai Airport for connections home.

Tour Details

Start location: Beijing

Finish location: Shanghai

Tour type: Combination bus and bike tour with three internal flights and a luxury cruise on the Yangtze. Support vehicle will be provided during days six to nine from Chengdu to Dazu. At other times, riders carry their own day gear.

Total cycling distance: Approximately 309 miles (500 km). Cycling will be supplemented with motor vehicle transport when necessary to reach the next destination.

Rental bike: Included in the tour. The bike will be fitted with panniers, helmet, gloves, raincape and a lock. We recommend bringing your own seat, pedals and cycling shoes for your comfort.

Accommodations will be generally 3 or 4 star Chinese hotels. The Yangtze River Cruise will be on a luxury boat.

The prices are for double occupancy rooms, and will vary depending on the number of people who participate. This tour is limited to no more than eight people. This will permit more flexibility in the program and allow more spontaneity for taking photos and exploring.

Prices include the following:

1. Bilingual bicycle tour guide.
2. All hotel accommodations for 16 nights.
3. Meals eaten as group (private meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages are not included).
4. All group transportation costs (three flights within China, luxury cruise on the Yangtze River, taxis, buses and trucks (during the bike tour).
5. All group entrance fees.
6. Rental bike.

This will be a vehicle-supported ride during days 6-10 on the route from Chengdu to Chongqing. This means that each person will carry only their day pack while cycling. Vehicle transportation will carry luggage and cyclists when necessary.

If you decide to do something on your own, you will be responsible for those costs.

Cost: Prices depend on the total number of people going on the tour and the time of year. Below are the price per person (pp) and quoted in US dollars (US$) for non-holiday periods*:

* Holiday Periods require a 30% surcharge to the basic price due to increased costs of hotels and transportation. Tours with overlapping dates will be prorated. These periods are: Chinese New Year (Feb. 7, 2008) from Feb 1-17, 2008 and (Jan. 26, 2009) from Jan. 19 to Feb. Feb. 2, 2009 Labor Day Apr. 24 - May 10; and National Day Sep. 25 - Oct. 10.


The cost of the tour will be announced to the group 30-days prior to the start based on the number of registered members.

A deposit of $300 is required. This is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to the start of the tour. Submission of a deposit will guarantee your place on the tour. Balance is at the beginning of the tour in traveler's checks (preferred because of safety) or cash.
