Blog of the 2009 CCCTS Western Sichuan Cycling Adventure
We love cycling in China and think you will too! It's a vast land with much natural beauty and settled by many different cultures. Traveling by bicycle provides the best way to take it all in and experience age-old ways of life that still survive in the countryside. People will welcome you and be very helpful if any problems arise. The Chinese will often be as curious about you as you are about them!
Extraordinary landscapes stretch across this expansive country, providing every kind of cycling opportunity that you can imagine. Do you like easy days of cycling along verdant rice fields studded with picturesque limestone pinnacles? Exploring grand monuments such as the Great Wall of China? Seeking out remote villages in tropical settings? Expanding your mind on lonely desert roads? Or the biggest challenge of all - riding in lofty heights of the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau?
China is full of surprises and you will be amazed with what you will find here. At Bike China Adventures, our goal is to show you the wonders of China in the best way possible - traveling by bicycle in small groups led by experienced guides. This site will help you plan a memorable bicycle tour in China.
Small tours are all we do.
We can arrange a private tour just for you and your friends, customized to your interests and pace of travel. You can enjoy the spontaneity and freedom to stop at interesting villages or take photos without having to worry about keeping up with the group.
If you are looking for travel companions, we can advertise your trip and help form a small group of people with similar interests. You'll be able to share experiences with other people in the group and enjoy lower costs.
No experience? No problem! We offer private introductory cycling tours that will make your ride in China a success. You'll learn how to adjust the bike to fit you and helpful hints on pacing and other cycling techniques. Additionally, we will teach you the basics of survival Chinese so that you can be comfortable interacting with local people on your own.
Experienced Touring Cyclists - Full Tour or Short "Introduction" Rides
Experienced, but new to China? No problem! We offer introduction rides that give you a "soft" landing before you embark on a long ride. An experienced guide will ride with you for a week or so to show you the "ropes" of cycle touring in China. You'll receive short language lessons, insights into ordering a restaurant meal, guidance on finding a hotel, advice on keeping healthy, and safety tips.
Show and Go Options - No bike? No problem!
Getting a bike in China is easy. You can rent one from us or buy your own. We can advise on the selection of your bicycle, panniers, and other equipment. Or we can provide it all for you. Diamondback mountain bikes with Shimano components are readily available at reasonable costs. Want to experience China from a bicycle, but don't feel up to pedaling all day? Perhaps an electric bicycle would be right for you; they can travel up to 80 kilometers on a single charge. Just let us know your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this work?
We give you many options! Perhaps start with Scheduled Tours to see if what you are looking for is there. Next, drop by Bike Tour Search and find out what tours can be arranged based on your choices of days, terrain, cycling level, and location. If you don't find the tour of your dreams, then let us design a Custom Tour for you! Just provide us with the dates you would like to travel, how challenging the terrain and pace should be, what comfort level to aim for, and your interests (historical, scenery, cultural, etc.). We will get back to you with a tour that meets your needs and fits your budget. You can rest assured that all our tours run with small numbers of people, usually less than five but no more than eight.
What is the cost?
At Bike China, we strive to give you the best possible small-group experience at a reasonable cost. The cost of a tour will generally be between US$90 and US$180 per day per person for an unsupported ride, meaning there will be no support vehicle and that each person will carry their own luggage throughout the trip. Alternative transportation such as buses, trucks or taxis will be used if members become too tired to continue, ill, or if there's insufficient time to complete the ride before dark. If you decide to do something on your own, you will be responsible for those costs.
The tour price will depend on--
- The number of people on the tour--the more people, the lower the per person cost
- The location of the tour--some areas are more expensive to travel in than others
- The amount of alternative transportation, such as airlines, used during the tour
- Optional bicycle rentals
- Optional vehicle support
On all but "bare-bones tours," we provide--
- A bilingual bicycle tour guide who will ride with you
- Hotel accommodations
- Meals eaten as group (private meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages are not included)
- Group transportation costs (buses, boats, and taxis)
- Group entrance fees
Want to lower costs and/or travel with a group?
If you would like to reduce the cost or have more people to share the experience with, you can open the tour up to others. Your tour would then be posted on the Bike China website. If others sign up, the price per person goes down. If no one signs up, then you have the option of doing the tour at the original quote, or canceling at no cost to you (at least 30-days before the start of the tour date).
